Medicare NPI Deadline May 28, 2008 As of May 28, 2008, the NPI is required for all HIPAA Standard Transactions. On all HIPAA electronic transactions, paper claims and SPR remittance advice, NPI must be used in primary and secondary provider fields. Medicare legacy identifiers in the primary or secondary fields will are no longer accepted and will result in rejection of the transaction.
